Why visit Bahia................???????????????
Here are 7 reasons for getting to know the state of Bahia as well as habits and customs of the bahianians:
1) HISTORICAL BACKGROUND - Salvador has its roots situated in the period of the portughese colonial domination. The district of PELOURINHO, with its coloured houses, has been declared by UNESCO as a human historical hereditary. Here we have the first social cell which was formed by african slaves. Walking along the beach, we come across SOLAR do UNHAO, first landing-place of the slaves, which were immediately sold to wealthy land owners.
Today SOLAR has been transformed into a museum with a fine restaurant which has been furnished in the colonial style of that period. The lighthouse of the town (FAROL da BARRA) holds its typical difensive construction (FORTE de SAO PEDRO) it has been restaurated and transformed into the biggest museum of the brazilian navy.
2) POPULAR FESTIVALS - (folks festivals). The bahianians are joyous people which like to celebrate traditional festivals, they celebrate the most numerous festivals of Brazil: IEMANJA (god of the sea), LAVAGEM do BOM FIN, SAO JOAO festival, REVEILLON end of the year concert with the participation of well known bahianian artists and at the end they conclude with fireworks
CARNAVAL (see number 3), LAVAGEM de ITAPOA, TERçA da BENçAO, in all these festivities you will come across mixture of colours, music, tropical drinks and dances which will leave you astonished.
3) CARNAVAL - This festival is worth a few more lines, the bahianians save the whole year, so that they can participate to the 6 days marathon of parades and music. There are two carnaval circuits in Salvador (Barra/Ondina and Campogrande), are animated by Blocos Eletricos, big double-dekker tracks, with exaggerated amplification, accompanied by a second truck with toilets and a bar. The Blocos go around the town very slowly and are surronded by a security organization, dancers and musical groups ( bands) are on the truck.
4) TRANSPORT - Salvador public transport system is developed by following the coast, taht's why it is extremely easy to quickly take a bus (onibus) or a minibus (micronibus) and to move from one point to another of the town. The INTERNATIONAL MAGALHAES AIRPORT is 40 minutes away by taxi or 60 minutes by bus. It's also possible to rent a car in the numerous agencies of the city.
5) MUSIC - Bahia could be defined the meeting point for the different musical groups. The contamination between MPB (popular brazilian music) and AXE (afromusic groups) has given life to a new original sound. It' s not rare to meet in the numerous local place well known artists like Caetano Veloso, Ivete Sangalo, Ara Ketu, Olodum, Ile Aye, while drinking an ice-cold beer, next to your table; in the evening you can listen to them in the rispective shows that are hold weekly and are repeated in the picturesque Salvador district.
6) ESCURSIONS - Bahia is not only sea and tropical beaches, but also natural reserve, like CHAPADA DIAMANTINA, a series of waterfalls, natural pools, and underground cave, which you can visit by taking a bus at RODOVIARIA, and after 5 hours of travelling, nearly going back in time, you will reach to a fantastic place, where every other adjective is wasted.
Within one hour and 30 minutes by bus from Salvador we will pass PRAIA do FORTE, reserve and archeological site, under the control of the IBAMA (national organization for the enviroment), here the TAMAR project has been developed, the marine turtles (caretta caretta) reproduce themselves and live under the strict control of the organization. For the people who love the sea very much, you cannot miss a visit to the MORRO de SAO PAULO (2 hours by catamarano from Salvador), crystal waters, forests, infinite coconut palms, and beach parties during the night. Even the ITAPARICA island, 30 minutes by boat from the little MERCADO MODELO port, has its charm, in fact here the time seems to have stopped along the little roads of the island; we can see villages with fisherman, and residential constructions that date back to the last century, everything goes together almost perfectly with the habits and customs of the islanders (quiet and relaxing..................NO STRESS).
7) CLIMATE - The word "cold" , is probably unknown to most of the bahianians, here in fact we go from 17/20 degrees in the winter period (june/july/august), to 30/ 35 degrees in summer (december/january/february), some problems are caused by the rains, which are sometimes abbondant, but when come back the sun the city and the beaches start to get crowded again by tourists and sportive people that go jogging daily
